Yield, a hospice in rural Saskatchewan, eases the process of death by embodying an inevitable human adaptation to nature. The building mimics the familiar domestic and rectilinear shapes of local farmhouses, yet is interrupted by curvilinear paths; this symbolizes an acceptance of nature’s ultimate authority. This relationship between forms is inspired by the qualities of prairie farmland, a patchwork of squares and rectangles in which straight crops are commonly redirected around the organic shapes that naturally occur in the landscape. The hospice provides ample daylight, views outside and access to gardens, ensuring that each visitor feels connected with the prairie landscape they call home.
